Graph Matching Game

What you will learn: how the way you move makes the shape of a position-time or velocity-time graph.

Level 1

Faint thick line = target. Solid line = you. Dashed lines split time into 2 s parts.

Track: 0 m on the left, 8 m on the right. Moving right = positive velocity.

Press Start, then drag the cart (or hold ← →) for 10 s so your line lands on the target.

Keys: space start/pause, r retry.

Try this

1. On a position-time graph, one part is steeper than another. What does that tell you about the cart?
Steeper means a bigger slope, and the slope of x-t is the velocity. So the cart moves faster there. Flat means it is at rest.
2. In level 8 ("Turn around") the x-t graph has a top. What is the velocity at the top? Is the acceleration zero there?
At the top the slope is zero, so v = 0 m/s for an instant. The acceleration is not zero: it stays -0.4 m/s^2 the whole time, which is why the cart turns around.
3. A velocity-time graph is flat at 1 m/s from 2 s to 4 s. How far does the cart move in that time?
Distance = area under the v-t graph = 1 m/s × 2 s = 2 m (to the right, since v is positive).
