Free help: the best notes and videos for AP Physics 1

This site should be enough on its own. But sometimes a different teacher, a different drawing or a different voice makes an idea click. These are the best free notes, videos and simulations made by teachers and professors, matched to the 8 units of the AP Physics 1 Course and Exam Description (fall 2024).

Last checked: 2026-10-05. Every link below was opened on that date. Websites change; if one breaks, the others in the same unit cover the same ideas.

How to use these with this site

  1. Watch first, short. Pick one short video or one page of hand-drawn notes for the topic (a Flipping Physics unit review is a good size). Pause and copy the main drawing yourself.
  2. Then predict on this site. Open the matching topic page here and turn on Predict first in the lab. Guess the graph or the answer before you press Play. A wrong guess you fix is worth more than a right guess you did not think about.
  3. Then practice. Do the practice questions on the topic page with the answers hidden. Only open an answer after you have written your own.
  4. Stuck? Change the teacher, not the topic. If an idea still feels foggy, try a second resource from the same row of the per-unit table, then come back to the lab.
  5. Extra drill. The Physics Classroom Concept Builders and Khan Academy exercises give instant feedback. Do one set per topic until you get a full set right.
  6. Exam month. Watch the Flipping Physics AP Physics 1 Exam Cram (all 8 units in about 30 minutes), then use the equation sheet page on this site.

The resources

Handwritten and hand-drawn styles come first, then videos, then text and simulations.

Flipping Physics (Mr. Jon Thompson)

Hand-drawn notesVideos
What
Short, funny videos taught to real students, each with a free PDF of hand-drawn lecture notes. Topics are tagged by difficulty.
Best for
Your first look at a topic, and fast review. AP Physics 1 Review has one video and one notes PDF for each unit 1 to 8 (unit 2 and unit 5 are split in two), plus an all-units notes PDF.
Cost
Free, no login. Videos also on YouTube.
Units
All 8, including the new fluids unit (Unit 8 review).

MIT 8.01 Physics I, Fall 2003 (Prof. Stanley Kowalski)

Blackboard snapshotsLecture notes
What
An archived MIT course with Professor Kowalski's lecture notes and PDF photos of his actual blackboards for 36 class sessions, kept in MIT's DSpace archive.
Best for
Seeing how a professor builds a solution on the board, step by step. A bit harder than AP (some calculus).
Cost
Free, no login. Download the course zip (about 81 MB) from the archive page and open the lecture notes folder.
Units
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (kinematics, forces, energy, collisions, rotation, oscillations).

MIT OpenCourseWare 8.01SC Classical Mechanics

What
MIT's self-study version of first-year mechanics: short lesson videos and worked examples by Dr. Peter Dourmashkin and colleagues, problem sets with solutions, and a free 31-chapter online textbook (PDF).
Best for
Going deeper once the AP idea makes sense. Textbook chapters 4 to 9 (kinematics, Newton's laws, circular motion), 13 to 15 (energy, collisions), 16 to 21 (rotation), 23 to 24 (oscillations), 27 to 28 (fluids).
Cost
Free, no login.
Units
All 8 (uses some calculus).

What
One PDF of lecture notes per class for a slower-paced MIT mechanics course.
Best for
A professor's short summary of one lecture at a time when the textbook feels too long.
Cost
Free, no login.
Units
1 to 7.

Walter Lewin, MIT 8.01 lectures (1999)

Videos
What
35 full classroom lectures with famous live demos (he rides a pendulum, swings a bowling ball at his chin). Public on his own YouTube channel and in a complete playlist.
Best for
The demos: energy conservation, momentum, rotation, pendulums. Each lecture is about 50 minutes, so pick one demo.
Cost
Free, no login. Note: MIT removed these from OpenCourseWare in 2014 after finding he broke its harassment policy, so they are no longer on an MIT site.
Units
1 to 8.

The Physics Classroom

TutorialPractice
What
Three parts, all made by teachers for high school:
  • Physics Tutorial: very clear plain-word lessons with diagrams and check-your-understanding questions.
  • Concept Builders: interactive question sets with instant feedback and hints.
  • Minds On Physics: longer question "missions" that make you explain your thinking.
Best for
Reading a gentle explanation, then drilling the concept until it sticks. Best of all for units 1 to 4.
Cost
Free, no login needed (has ads; ad-free is optional and paid). Saving progress needs a teacher's class account.
Units
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (Rotation and Balance), 7 (Vibrations and Waves), 8 (Fluids).

Khan Academy: AP/College Physics 1

VideosArticlesPractice
What
Videos drawn on a digital blackboard, short articles, and practice exercises with hints. Khan rebuilt this course for the fall 2024 AP Physics 1 framework, unit by unit.
Best for
Practice questions with instant feedback that follow the AP unit order exactly.
Cost
Free. Works without login; a free account saves your progress.
Units
All 8, same names as the AP units.

AP Daily videos (AP Classroom)

Videos
What
The College Board's own short videos for every topic, taught by experienced AP teachers, plus topic questions and progress checks in the same style as the exam.
Best for
Hearing exactly how the exam writers phrase each idea.
Cost
Free, but needs a College Board login and a join code from your AP teacher's class. If you are not in an AP class, use the free AP Students page for the course outline and exam overview.
Units
All 8.

OpenStax College Physics for AP Courses 2e

Textbook
What
A full free textbook written for AP, with "Connection for AP Courses" pages (example: chapter 2), worked examples and test-prep questions at the end of each chapter.

Looking something up properly, and extra practice problems. Chapters: 2 to 3 kinematics, 4 to 6 forces, gravity and circular motion, 7 energy, 8 momentum, 9 torque, 10 rotation, 16 oscillations, 11 to 12 fluids.
Cost
Free online or as a PDF; no login to read.
Units
All 8.

HyperPhysics (Georgia State University)

Concept maps
What
Professor Rod Nave's web of short concept pages. Each idea is a bubble map linked to its formulas, with built-in calculators.
Best for
Seeing how ideas connect, and quick formula checks. Not a first lesson; terse.

Free, no login.
Units
All 8, e.g. motion, Newton's laws, simple harmonic motion, buoyancy.

PhET Interactive Simulations (University of Colorado Boulder)

Simulation
What
Free research-tested simulations you play with in the browser. A few older ones are Java versions that PhET now runs in the browser; they are slower and may not work well on a phone.
